Executive Director, King’s MFA in Creative Nonfiction

The University of King’s College School of Journalism in Halifax is seeking candidates for the half-time permanent position of Executive Director of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction. Reporting to the Director of the School of Journalism, the Executive Director works with faculty and staff to manage the program by:

  • planning, organizing, and monitoring the annual summer residency in Halifax and winter residences in Toronto and New York (in alternating years);
  • assisting with the creation and implementation of marketing plans and promotional materials;
  • assisting in recruitment efforts;
  • consulting on the recruitment of writers to serve as mentors in the program.

The Executive Director:

  • serves on related and ongoing committees and boards dealing with admissions, budgets, and industry support;
  • creates strategic liaisons with publishing industry leaders and affiliated programs in order to strengthen the core curriculum;
  • administers the budget and liaises with key staff at King’s in the Bursar’s Office, Registrar’s Office, Advancement Office and King’s Facilities Management
  • develops and delivers key components of the curriculum related to the business and professional aspects on non-fiction writing, including contract negotiations, author publicity and promotion, and the establishment of a writer’s entrepreneurial platform.

Candidates must have a graduate degree and at least 8 years’ experience in Canadian publishing. The ideal candidate will be:

  • intimately familiar with the creative and business sides of the publishing industry in Canada and the United States;
  • have extensive and current contacts among top-level authors, editors, publishers, and industry organizations;
  • will have worked in a related academic environment.

The starting date for this position is May 1, 2017, but the successful candidate will be invited to participate (with pay) in the eight-day MFA winter residency in New York from January 8 – 14, 2017. Salary is commensurate with experience; the range is $45,000 – $51,000 per annum for this half-time permanent position.
