This course examines political works, philosophical and literary, by important and/or influential writers from the eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries, in the context of the rise of modern civil society, the expansion of European colonialism, changing gender norms, the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic wars.
