Shannon Fay wins short story competition

Shannon Fay graduated from King’s with a BJH in 2009. Since then, she has been working part-time in a bookstore and part-time as a freelance writer. Success came calling this spring in the form of the 2013 James White Award, a contest for new short story writers that is administered by the British Science Fiction Association.

Shannon’s winning story, "You First Meet the Devil at a Church Fete," will be published in Interzone magazine. Commenting on the story, one of the judges, Aliette de Bodard, says, "A wonderful, strong voice and a delightful set-up. It’s hard to do original stories involving bargains with the Devil, but I thought this one managed to offer a fresh take and an poignant and effective ending."

Congratulations, Shannon!
