Residence Assistant – EMSP Study Abroad Program, Italy

Residence Assistant – EMSP Study Abroad Program, Italy

Term: May 4 – 31, 2019

EMSP 2510, “Early Modern Art, Literature, and Politics in Florence, Italy,” provides an intensive introduction to the art, literature, philosophy, and politics of Early Modern Italy (1280-1580), with a special focus on Florence. Taught entirely on-site, this course offers students the unique opportunity to consider the civic, ecclesiastical, and domestic spheres of Renaissance Florentine life through daily visits to the city’s town halls, churches, palaces, and museums.

The course runs from May 4 to May 31, 2019. During that time, the Residence Assistant (RA) will help the Instructor supervise and provide non-academic support for the 20 students enrolled in the program. The duties include providing initial crisis response, offering on-call support to students as needed, and liaising with the accommodations staff to ensure students are following regulations. The RA will be expected to contribute to the student life of the program by maintaining a friendly, respectful and safe environment, but will not attend classes or take on any course-related responsibilities.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree of at least one year’s standing. They should possess excellent leadership, communication, and listening skills, and be able to work independently. Experience in leadership positions and in providing peer support is highly desirable: applicants with Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (A.S.I.S.T.) and Mental Health First Aid will be given priority. Travel experience and Italian language skills would be an asset, but are not required.

Remuneration is a private room in the Casa di Santo Nome di Gesu (with private bath and daily breakfast); an Amici degli Uffizi membership (which provides unlimited priority access to the Uffizi Gallery, the Pitti Palace Galleries, and the Boboli Gardens), reimbursement for an approved travel cell phone plan, and return flight and airport transfers to Florence, Italy. The dates of the flights can be arranged individually, up to a set maximum, but the Residence Assistant must arrive at the Casa on Saturday, May 4, 2019 and depart Friday, May 31, 2019.

Qualified applicants are asked to submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae or resume and the names and contact information of three references no later than Friday, February 22, 2019 to:
