Volunteer Position - Treasurer of the Board of Governors

Volunteer Position - Treasurer of the Board of Governors

The University of King’s College, founded in 1789, was the first university to be established in English Canada.  Situated in the heart of university community in Halifax, King’s offers arts, science and humanities programs that are unique in Atlantic Canada, including its renowned Foundation Year Program (FYP), Journalism (including a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction) and King’s Honours Programs (including Contemporary and Early Modern Studies and the History of Science and Technology).  King’s is a special place, with a rich campus life and a deep connection with both the spiritual and the secular.

King’s is experiencing its renaissance and is looking for a dynamic and skilled community member to assist us in that process.  The Board of Governors at King’s is responsible to provide strategic leadership, effective stewardship and to advance the best interests of the University as a whole. Board members represent the interests of all constituencies that are vital to the mission of King’s.

King’s is looking for an interested individual from the community to join King’s as the Treasurer of its Board of Governors.  In particular, King’s is seeking a dynamic and thoughtful individual with a strong background in finance and accounting (including budgeting). Experience and knowledge in risk management would be considered an asset.

Individuals who have a current appreciation for the University or are who are otherwise keen to learn about King’s are both encouraged to apply.

King’s believes that diversity and inclusiveness are central to the identity and practice of the University and should be reflected in the governance of King’s.  We make diversity and inclusion a priority and strive for the membership of our Board and Board committees to reflect this priority.

Participation on the Board at King’s requires a minimum commitment of participation and attendance at quarterly Board meetings (four times per year for an average total commitment of 32 to 35 hours).  The Treasurer of the Board will also be expected to chair the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee of the Board of Governors which meets periodically between quarterly Board meetings (a total average commitment of approximately 15 – 20 hours per year). Attendance at Board orientation is required in the first year of participation on the Board, and ongoing Board education will be provided throughout your tenure.

All meetings take place in Halifax, but virtual attendance is possible.

In addition to the above, Board members are welcome and encouraged to attend campus events, including lectures and formal dinners, and to participate generally in raising the profile of King’s in the wider community.

Do you have the skills we need?  Candidates are asked to send their resume and brief cover letter to Jennifer Gray, Chair of the Governance, Human Resources and Nominating Committee, University of King’s College at Jennifer.gray@mcinnescooper.com. We sincerely thank those who take the time to apply.
