Liederabend: An Evening of Song
This special concert in King’s President’s Lodge enacts a “Schubertiade”: the kind of evening that Franz Schubert and his friends held when they sang his marvellous and powerful songs 200 years ago. The singers will be voice students from Dalhousie’s School of Performing Arts supported by collaborative pianist Greg Myra under the direction of Marcia Swanston, Professor of Voice at Dalhousie. Franz Schubert, who died at the age of 31, wrote more than 600 songs (“lieder”) and in doing so really established the Lied, the German art song, as a distinctive art form. It is a from that combines intimacy and deeply moving, romantic power in a highly compressed form. The evening should be a deeply memorable.
