The Sarajevo Haggadah: Music of the Book

Dr. Daniel Brandes

A multimedia musical event with an introductory lecture by Dr. Daniel Brandes.

Composer-performer Merima Ključo’s multimedia work for accordion and video traces the dramatic story of one of Jewish culture’s most treasured manuscripts. Created in Barcelona around 1350, the beautifully illuminated Sarajevo Haggadah tells the story of the Jewish people’s exodus from Egypt. During its long life, the manuscript has travelled from Spain to Italy and later to Bosnia, where it was rescued during World War 2 by members of the Muslim community and finally restored by the National Museum in Sarajevo after the 1992-95 war. Drawing upon the musical traditions of Spain, Italy, Austria, and Bosnia-Herzegovina—and featuring the haunting imagery of the manuscript itself—The Sarajevo Haggadah: Music of the Book creatively interprets this miraculous artifact as a universal symbol of exile, return, and co-existence.
