UKC Blue Devils Vs Humber College
The Blue Devils faced third-ranked Humber College in the battle for fifth/sixth place. The girls were
prepared and gave it everything they had for the final 90 minutes of their season.
Humber went up 1-0 early in the first of a free kick just outside the box. A great save by goalkeeper
Rebekah Cook unfortunately took an awkward rebound of the cross bar resulting in a scramble on the goal line.
The Blue Devils went into halftime so positive that they knew they could win this game and were
prepared to give everything they had for the remaining 45 minutes. The girls did just that. Weather conditions of snow and freezing temperatures carried on throughout the second half but that did not faze the Blue Devils. They knew they had 45 mintutes left and they continued to attack and press Humber College tremendously. Chances arose and Kings continued to push hard.
Defender Kelly O’Connor was injured and taken off after a nasty tackle. The fourth official signaled
two added minutes of extra time. At this point the snow was blowing and Kings was eager to find
the equalizer. Striker Irene Flatley ran down and pressed a Humber defender to be awarded a corner. Last chance of the game with 20 seconds left for kings to equalize. Everyone was forwarded, a beautiful corner floated in by Allison Smith found the head of veteran and fourth year player, Sarah Kraus, who found the back of the net to tie the game up at 1-1. The fans went crazy and the entire King’s squad knew this game was not over. Final whistle blew and we went straight into penalty shots.
King’s started off the shootout well with assistant captain Jaime Trueland scoring the first PK of the game.
Rookie Monique Comeau stepped up to take King’s second penalty and made no mistake about it
scoring a beautiful PK. Rebekah Cook, Kings keeper, saved Humber’s third PK shot giving Kings that slight break. Third PK taker for kings, captain Marika McKenzie had no problems scoring UKC’s third penalty
kick. Allison Smith stepped up to take the fourth penalty and once again buried the ball in the back of the
net. 4 out of 4 for UKC and one left
King’s last penalty was up. If the Blue Devils scored, they would win. Up steps fourth year Sarah Kraus. Without any hesitation, she scores kings fifth goal. Kings was 5 for 5, and we beat Humber college to finish fifth at the CCAA national
championships.
What a brilliant ending to a brilliant season. Player of the Game was awarded to Irene Flatley.
