Differing theoretical approaches to memory (sociological, psychoanalytic, deconstructive) will be explored alongside various memorial genres & practices (archives, monuments, trials, collective rituals, films and works of literature). The goal of the seminar will be to situate the current preoccupation with memory in relation to questions of identity, to the critiques of historicism which characterize the era of ‘post-history,’ to the emergence of the ‘ethics of witnessing’ and finally, to an understanding of the past as a site of politics.
