Can We Talk?: The Uneasy Relationship between Journalism and Government

Across the country and around the world reporters are facing greater challenges as they seek information from governments and institutions. This impacts how they do their job of informing the public and making elected officials accountable. Governments must balance privacy, business interests and cabinet confidentiality, but we see more examples of increasing control of what information gets out. That includes political leaders refusing interviews or delaying or censoring Freedom of Information requests. The result is a less informed public, which has an impact on voters and our democracy.

This panel takes a balanced and thoughtful look at the issue of media/public access from the perspectives of journalists, provincial politicians and academics who study the relationship.
