This public series is being organized by Dr. Dorota Glowacka in collaboration with Dalhousie’s Jewish Studies Department, MSVU’s Two-Eyed Seeing Program, and other university and community partners. Miawe’g Masgwi | Among the Birches | Pomiędzy Brzozami

Among the Birches is a co-curated exhibit of artwork by Two-Spirit Mi’kmaw artist Jessica Jerome, from the Mi’kmaw community of Gesgapegiag, Quebec, and by the Polish-Jewish Zapomniane (Forgotten) Foundation, represented by Aleksandra Janus and Aleksander Schwarz.
Artists will reflect on the legacies of Mi’kmaw and Jewish traumatic histories, and explore different approaches to the role of community-based art in the preservation of memory and cultural heritage.

Join us for the Keynote Roundtable of this event series with three fascinating guests.
Lorena Sekwan Fontaine (Moderator) is a member of the Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba. She is Professor and Department Head of the Indigenous Studies Program at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
John Moses is a member of the Delaware and Upper Mohawk bands from the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory near Brantford, Ont. A former director (retired) of repatriation and Indigenous relations at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., he is now an independent Indigenous advisor and consultant to museums and heritage organizations.
Erica Lehrer is a sociocultural anthropologist, historian and curator. She is Professor in the History Department and past Canada Research Chair in Museum and Heritage Studies at Concordia University in Montreal.

Film Screenings and Conversation is exactly what it appears to be! Please join us for the screening of two films on the theme of cultural preservation through material culture, followed by a conversation between Mi’kmaw Elder and filmmaker Catherine Martin and scholar Dorota Glowacka.
The Basket Maker (2017), by award-winning Mi’kmaw documentary filmmaker and producer Catherine Martin.
Mina’s Recipe Book: Terezin 1944 (2017), tells the story of a recipe book created by a female inmate in the Terezin Nazi concentration camp.
“Fostering Indigenous-Jewish Dialogue in Mi’kma’ki: A Two-Eyed Seeing/Etuaptmumk Approach” will also include workshops for students and workshops for faculty and staff on the topics of: language destruction and revitalization, material culture, and restitution and return of cultural objects.
