King’s and Halifax (Kjipuktuk) sit on unceded Mi’kmaw land in Mi’kma’ki.

King’s is deeply committed to the work of Reconciliation and to creating an environment where Indigenous students, staff and faculty can thrive.

Mawio’mio’kuom - Indigenous students centre

You'll find the centre in Alex Hall on the first floor. It's a quiet space where you decompress, study, meet others, have a snack and find the Indigenous Support and Outreach Coordinator..

Mawaknutma’tinej – The Mi’kmaw/Indigenous Circle

The Mi’kmaw/Indigenous Circle comprises Indigenous community leaders and representatives from the University of King's College. The Circle advises and guides the university on initiatives in support of the Indigenous community, students, faculty and staff.

COURSES

Indigenous Peoples and the Media

What does a decolonized media landscape look like? In this course students gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous perspectives, Canadian history, key issues in reporting and impacts of colonialism, and will look critically at the role of media in shaping the narrative of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Reporting in Mi'kmaki

Reporting in Mi’kma’ki is an on-the-ground, immersive course that teaches students how to report on Indigenous stories responsibly. Read about the course, about how it started, one student's experience and more.

SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

Mi'kmaw Journalism Initiative

The University of King’s College will cover tuition costs for up to three Mi’kmaw students per year in the Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) program and encourage L’nu’k from Mi’kma’ki with lived experience to apply. Here's how.

Dr. Carrie Best Scholarship

For Indigenous students in Canada and African Canadians enrolling in a four-year Bachelor of Journalism (Hons), BA, BSc, or Bachelor of Music.

CTV News Atlantic Scholarship

For students with demonstrated interest in television journalism. Preference given to Indigenous students in Canada and Black Canadian students.

Journalism Director's Award

Open to Mi'kmaw or African Nova Scotian students entering the one-year Bachelor of Journalism program.

Reader's Digest Journalism Scholarship

For students interested in print journalism. Preference given to visible minority or other under-represented groups.

Graduate & Advanced Awards

King's offers a number of awards to students interested in our Bachelor of Journalism (one year), Master of Journalism, and both Master of Fine Arts programs.

RECONCILIATION

The Calls to Action and King's

The TRC's 94 Calls to Action included the call for post-secondary institutions to engage in decolonization and increase equitable access to education for Indigenous students. As a university with journalism programs, King’s is also committed to advancing the Calls to Action related to Media and Reconciliation.

Reconciliation Resources

Members of the King’s community, particularly settler Canadians, are exploring ways to bring the work of decolonization and reconciliation to their everyday practice. These resources include information on how to bring this work and practice into your scholarly pursuits, financial choices, daily life and relationship to the land.
