Concord Floral

DMV Theatre Artistic Director Pamela Halstead, BA’88

DMV Theatre Artistic Producer, Pamela Halstead, BA’88, returns to her alma mater with the Nova Scotia premiere of Concord Floral, by Jordan Tannahill. Finalist for the 2016 Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama and winner of the 2015 Dora Award for Outstanding New Play, this stunning piece of theatre is “An ensemble choral piece that packs a theatrical and emotional punch.” (Jon Kaplan, NOW Toronto).

Concord Floral is a one-million-square-foot abandoned greenhouse and a refuge for neighbourhood kids; a place all to themselves in which to dream, dare, and come of age. But hidden there is a secret no one wants to confront. When two friends stumble upon it, they set off an unstoppable chain of events, from shadows in parking lots to phone calls from the grave. It’s time for the teens of Concord Floral to start talking….

Concord Floral was originally created with high school students from across the greater Toronto area and it is recommended that it be produced with students instead of professional actors. The DMV Theatre production will feature King’s students and high school students from the Halifax area in the cast. Additionally, DMV Theatre is offering a mentorship component for students in the technical aspects of theatre production including stage management, lighting and sound design.

Powerful and haunting, Concord Floral holds nothing back as it delves deep into the realities of being a teenager in our modern world. Not often does theatre speak to young people in such a direct way, while leaving audiences of all ages completely enthralled until the very end. Tannahill’s heart wrenching hit will leave you gasping for air and wanting more.
