On January 22, 2024, the Government of Canada (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) announced a study permit cap for post-secondary students.
For undergraduate students: in order to apply for a study permit, you must first accept your offer of admission and pay the $2,500 non-refundable admission (enrolment) deposit before you can request a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). PALs may only be requested, approved and issued to you from King’s (you cannot obtain a PAL through the provincial government) and can be requested through your application status portal. Once a PAL has been issued, you may then submit your study permit application to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). If you are unsure of your status in Canada or you don’t know if you need a study permit, please contact IRCC as soon as possible.
For graduate students: as of January 1, 2026, graduate students will not need to submit a PAL with their study permit application. Please see the most recent announcement from IRCC.
Please visit the IRCC website for more details on studying in Canada as an international student and the study permit application process.
