Books by Heart is a public humanities project that explores the potential of book culture to affect patients and staff in a hospital setting.
A study is currently underway at Nova Scotia Health’s QEII Health Sciences Centre, funded in part by Research Nova Scotia. Atlantic Books is providing the digital book collection and is working with publishers to ensure the books meet digital accessibility standards, which will be an integral part of the hospital project.
The project is also an experiential learning opportunity, providing students with opportunities to turn ideas into action and evolution alongside a diverse group of professionals working to advance this project. Students worked on a beta test of the reading platform in 2022 and 2023 and now work directly with patients as research assistants on a hospital ward.
