Harrison McCain Emerging Scholar Awards

Harrison McCain Emerging Scholar Awards

Acknowledgement

The Harrison McCain Emerging Scholar Awards were created thanks to a generous gift from the Harrison McCain Foundation in December 2025. This gift enables King’s to make strategic investments in early-career faculty.

Purpose

The goal of these awards is to support early-career scholarship and professional practice. These awards are exclusively for early-career faculty in all King’s programs in the Humanities and School of Journalism, Writing & Publishing. This is intended to help early-career scholars demonstrate a track record of obtaining research funding, which is crucial for leveraging additional support for their research activities or professional development and publication.

Eligibility

The Harrison McCain Emerging Scholar Awards are available to early-career members of faculty at King’s. This is typically understood to include faculty in the first five years of their appointment in tenure-track appointments (during the pre-tenure stage); limited term appointments including Junior and Senior Faculty Fellows in the Humanities (Foundation Year Program); and Cohort Directors in the Writing & Publishing Program.

Grant Amount and Duration

Applications may be made for any amount up to $10,000 and for a maximum of two years in duration.

Eligible Expenses

The Harrison McCain Emerging Scholar Awards may be used for research travel costs, research assistance, supplies and equipment. Other typical direct costs of research may also be considered.

Priority will be given to emerging scholars who have not previously received a Harrison McCain Emerging Scholar Award. Prior awardees who have not yet completed their project are not eligible for this competition.

Application Procedure

Applicants must submit their research grant application form as well as all relevant documentation to the King’s Human Resources and Compensation Officer.

Research Grant application

There are normally four deadlines for application:

  1. 15 March
  2. 15 June
  3. 15 September
  4. 15 January

Notes:

  1. If the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, the next business day will serve as the deadline.
  2. Late or retroactive applications will not be accepted.
  3. Research grants are to support research carried out after the relevant application deadline.

Grant Administration

  • Funds given as research grants will be retained in the Bursar’s Office until drawn upon (with proper documentation). Unused funds will be returned to the Harrison McCain Emerging Faculty Award fund at the end of the grant funding period.
  • Applicants must submit to the Human Resources and Compensation Officer and the Chair of the Research and Travel Funding Committee a one-page final report on the results of the research project by the end of the grant term indicating if and how the results were disseminated and if it has led to an application to an external funding agency.
