UKC Rugby Recap: September 20-26

Women’s Rugby

The winning streak continues for the UKC Women’s Rugby team, winning handily on the road at St. Thomas University 50-17. Playing on the road for the first time since their season opening loss to the University of New Brunswick, the Blue Devils dismissed any doubts of travel-lag, taking an early lead over the host Tommies. Anchored by centre Amelia Jardine, who recorded a team-high three tries and four conversions, King’s dominated the game from start to finish. Other scorers included Caitlyn Gannon, Chloe Beamish, Mackenzie Butt, Taryn Hanrahan, and Mali Triger.

Now 2-1 on the season, the Blue Devils sit second in the table, trailing only the Varsity Reds of UNB who remain undefeated after three games. In a replay of this past week’s action, King’s will play host to St. Thomas this coming Sunday, October 3 at 2 p.m. on St. Francis field in Halifax. A win will secure the Blue Devils a playoff berth in October for the ACAA Women’s Rugby Championships.

Men’s Rugby

On a rainy Sunday afternoon at Graves Oakley field in Spryfield, the UKC Men narrowly lost out to the visiting Capers of Cape Breton University by a score of 19-16. Trading leads throughout the first half, Cape Breton entered the break leading 12-6, with King’s having recorded two penalty kicks by Ryoma Mibuchi. The Capers would prove to be the stronger team entering the second half, scoring a try and conversion to balloon the score to 19-6. The Blue Devils fought back as the half continued, recording consecutive tries, with Mibuchi and fly-half Luke Dyment both finding their way into the try-zone. Despite having the momentum, King’s were ultimately ran out of time before they could add the decisive try.

After three games the UKC Men are 1-2, with a total of 4 points coming from their singular 4-point-win at Saint Francis Xavier in the season opener. With their upcoming match with Acadia having been postponed, Head Coach Geno Carew and his squad will enjoy an extended two-week rest period before their next matches at Dalhousie on October 14 at 5 p.m. and a replay at Cape Breton in Sydney on October 16 at 2 p.m.
