On the death of Queen Elizabeth II

On the death of Queen Elizabeth II

Dear King’s Community,

The flags in the Quad have been lowered and the Chapel’s bells tolled to acknowledge the death of Queen Elizabeth II. In this moment, we share appreciation for her life of service, which started at the very young age of 25 and continued to the age of 96. Over the course of her life, Queen Elizabeth was a source of inspiration and, particularly during the Second World War and most recently during the Covid-19 pandemic, a source of reassurance and comfort to many.

Relationships to institutions, including the monarchy, have changed greatly since our university received its Royal Charter from King George III in 1802. And yet, beyond the formalities of her role, Queen Elizabeth’s reign leaves us a legacy of steadfast commitment to duty and service that will long be remembered and admired.

Sincerely,

William Lahey
President, Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Law
