A high octane season opener saw the UKC women take the lead at Dal AC and never looked back, besting the Rams by a runaway score of 88-0. Eight individual Blue Devils found the try zone, led by 21-22 ACAA Rookie of the Year, Chloe Beamish with five. Elsewhere, recent transfer Emily White made waves on the score sheet, finishing a single try and scoring 9/14 conversions for a fully tally of 23 points in her debut for King’s. Other to find the try zone were Clara Schumph, Madi McGregor, Amy Rendall, Sophie van Berkel (2), Amelia Jardine and Mia Till (2).
Beyond the handsome scoreline, head coach Lysa McGrath and staff will celebrate the fluidity of their squads ball movement, particularly across the the back players. The new additions to the roster of Madi McGregor, Sophie van Berkel and Mia Till compliment the existing structure of last season, and mesh well with the veteran talent base defined by Chloe Beamish, Amelia Jardine and Leigh Eisan, among other. The Blue Devils will continue their ACAA campaign on Sunday, September 18th when they play host to St. Thomas University at 2 p.m. on St. Francis field.

Men’s Rugby
Geno Carew’s boys are 2-0 in season openers since he took over as head coach in 2020, cruising to a 22-7 win over St. Francis Xavier University at Graves Oakley field in a Friday evening match. The Blue Devils took an early lead 3-0 via a Hirundith de Costa penalty around the seven minute mark. King’s would extend the lead to 10 after wing Tim Cater found the try zone after an extended solo run, and de Costa completed the subsequent conversion. Cater would reach the try zone a second time before half, extending the lead to 15 heading into the interval. A King’s try and conversion, by Evan Mostovac and de Costa respectively, brought the UKC lead to 22, before the visiting X-Men found the scoresheet in the games closing stages bringing the score to 22-7.
The win at home is particularly positive considering the circumstances. Captain and fifth-year leader, Noah Lawless was a far cry from 100 per cent after illness during the week, while 21-22 league All-Star Ryoma Mbuchi was sidelined in preparation for a provincial club final scheduled for the weekend. Productive yardage from the backs, namely Cater, de Costa and Sam Maiorino propelled the King’s offence forward, while the development of front row players Rowan Sanderson and Joel Benedicton helped retain possession and gave scrum-half Dylan Aleck opportunities to move the ball. The Kingsmen will be in action again this weekend at home when they host the Tigers of Dalhousie at St. Francis Field at 11 a.m., Sunday September 18th.
