The King’s Students’ Union (KSU) is an organization representing more than 1,000 students on King’s campus in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The KSU offers a number of services to its membership, including two businesses committed to ethical purchasing (the HMCS King’s Wardroom bar and King’s Galley café), sexual health products and a Health & Dental plan.
The Wardroom and Galley operate in a space that gathers King’s students, faculty, staff and alumni in community. The Wardroom bar is the only wet/dry bar operation in the province of Nova Scotia. This makes it an inclusive social space for the entire King’s community, including underage students. The Wardroom is proud to offer some of the cheapest local drinks in the city and serves a variety of seasonal craft beers and cocktails. During the day the King’s Galley sells locally-sourced food (specializing in grilled cheese sandwiches) and beverages, and the
Wardroom space functions as a student lounge and study space. The primary aim of both businesses is to provide a financially accessible, locally sourced food and beverage service to the KSU membership, and to do so while catering to a variety of dietary restrictions. Both
businesses receive their direction from the student population via the KSU.
The Hospitalities Coordinator (HC) is responsible for the supervision and administrative work of the Wardroom and Galley businesses. The HC is responsible for the financial reporting, payroll and budgeting of both businesses, as well as for the supervision of the General Managers and Supervisors, and for the general operation of both businesses. The HC works closely with the General Managers to make and receive orders for both businesses.
The Hospitalities Coordinator is supervised by the KSU President. The HC also interacts on a daily basis with students, faculty and staff members around the university, as well as Wardroom, Galley and KSU employees.
Annual salary of $50,000 (with room for negotiation).
This is a full-time position, working Monday through Sunday of each week as required, for a total of 140 hours per four-week period (pro-rated for statutory holidays). The HC will work in the KSU office, the HC office, the Wardroom, the Galley and other such places at or about the University of King’s College, and will also make themselves available by cell phone at all times, including evenings and weekends.
1. Maintain the good standing of the Wardroom’s liquor license and compliance with all legislation pertaining to liquor control, food safety, permits and licenses as required for the operation of both businesses.
2. Submit adequate financial documentation to the bookkeeper so that financial statements may be produced. In addition, the HC reviews and approves financial statements in conjunction with the KSU President for submission to the accountants, and submit HST.
3. Process payroll for both businesses in conjunction with General Managers.
4. Supervise the Wardroom and Galley General Managers and directly supervise the general staff of the Wardroom and Galley. Further, the HC is responsible for the resolution of employee concerns, disciplinary matters and dismissals in conjunction with the General Managers.
5. Receive and make orders, and maintain inventory in conjunction with the General Managers.
6. Be on-call for the Wardroom and Galley during their hours of operation.
7. Hire and train staff people for both businesses in conjunction with the General Managers.
8. Report to the Wardroom Advisory Committee (WAC) and the Galley Board of Directors (GBoD), as well as a quarterly report to the King’s Students’ Union Council.
9. Oversee the discipline of patrons who act in opposition to the HMCS Wardroom Code of Conduct, University Code of Conduct, and Nova Scotia Liquor Laws with respect to ongoing entry and use of the HMCS Wardroom, in conjunction with the President, Wardroom Board of Management and General Manager.
10. Liaise directly with outside business partners on behalf of the Wardroom and Galley, and pursue any research regarding potential suppliers for either business.
