Summary of the role

The UKC Athletics Department is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to lead our varsity badminton program as Head Coach. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for badminton, a commitment to the development of student-athletes and the ability to foster a positive and inclusive team culture both on and off the court. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on student-athletes while contributing to the overall success of the athletics program.

Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Promote academic success, sportsmanship and character development.
  • Communicate clearly and consistently regarding team expectations, accountability and feedback, fostering an environment of trust and openness.
  • Co-create and sustain a positive, inclusive team culture with student-athletes, including the development of shared team values and expectations.
  • Plan and lead practices that meet the needs of both small and large group sessions.
  • Provide individualized instruction and feedback to student-athletes.
  • Prepare tournament strategies, including scouting reports and player evaluations.
  • Lead team meetings, film sessions and other program activities.
  • Work with the Athletics Department to manage team logistics, scheduling, travel, equipment inventory and budgeting; and collaborate with school administrators.
  • Uphold all institutional and league policies, rules and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain a thoughtful recruitment and player development strategy to support competitive success.
  • Support fundraising initiatives and engage alumni with the Athletics Department.
  • Monitor and support student-athletes in their academic progress.
  • Recruit, supervise and support assistant coaching staff.
  • Be available to work evenings and weekends during the academic year.

Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree required.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience coaching as an Assistant or Head Coach with a proven track record of success. Coaching experience at a post-secondary institution would be considered an asset. Previous experience coaching both men’s and women’s sport considered an asset.
  • Proof of NCCP Competition Introduction certification and commitment to obtain increased coaching education and upgrades upon hire. Provide NCCP # in application.
  • CPR/First Aid or willingness to obtain upon hire.
  • Experience as a varsity athlete or working experience in an Athletics Department considered an asset.
