Frequently Asked Questions

When will Encaenia for my graduating class take place?

King’s is committed to finding a meaningful way to mark Encaenia 2021. As you know, President Lahey is committed to an in-person event in the future. In the current circumstances, we do not yet know when or what form that will take. We will let you know when we have further information and we thank you for your patience. Meanwhile, and with your help, a celebration is being planned for May 27.

Will I still be able to graduate and when will my degree be awarded?

King’s and Dalhousie will ensure that all students who meet the graduation eligibility criteria are awarded their degree/credential(s) when Dalhousie Senate and King’s Convocation meet in May to confer degrees. Dalhousie and King’s joint degrees will be conferred on the Dalhousie Senate date of May 18, 2021. King’s undergraduate journalism degrees will be conferred by King’s Convocation on May 25, 2021. We will celebrate your achievements together on May 27.

Final graduation eligibility checks will be completed at the beginning of May. If you are completing a course at another institution through the Letter of Permission process, please note that grades are due by the end of April at the latest. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to graduation@dal.ca or registrar@ukings.ca with any questions you may have about being awarded your degree.

How will King’s communicate to me about 2021 graduation celebrations?

All the information about the plans for the 2021 graduating class will be shared on this page and sent to your @dal.ca email address.

Will I be able to have graduation photos taken?

Due to increased COVID-19 precautions in Nova Scotia, we had to make the difficult decision to postpone any in-person graduation photography on campus during the week of April 26. In the meantime, if you’d like to borrow a gown and hood and take your own photos, please email Monica Farrell who can mail these items to you, wherever you live.

When will I receive my parchment?

In June and after Senate has met to confer degrees, we will mail parchments and certificates to all graduating students. Your parchment will be sent to your current address as it appears in DalOnline.

Please check your mailing address in DalOnline and make any necessary adjustments by May 14. You can find and edit your mailing address by following these steps: Login to DalOnline > Main Menu > Personal Information > View/Update Addresses (also, View/Update Personal Information as required).

How will my name appear on my degree and in the celebratory video?

As a legal document, your full legal name as it appears in DalOnline will be printed on your parchment and transcript. If a change to your legal name is required, please email us a scan or photograph of a piece of government issued photo ID (i.e., licence, passport) to support your request by May 14.

Preferred name/name pronunciation for reading of the list of graduates and video

A formal reading of the list of graduates will be a part of the celebratory video for 2021 and it is important to us to read and pronounce your name in accordance with your wishes. We will use your preferred name in the list of graduating students and in the reading of the names. If you have a preferred name that is not already on your student record or would like to provide direction on how to pronounce your name, please email registrar@ukings.ca with your preferred name and/or the phonetic spelling of your name to assist with pronunciation.

I applied to graduate but am concerned that I may not have met the requirements for my degree. Who should I talk to?

If you’re hoping to graduate but are unclear on where you stand following the Winter 2021 semester, please reach out to Julia & Kirstin in the Academic Services Team at registrar@ukings.ca. They’re here to help.
