The Master of Fine Arts summer residency is an important part of the MFA in Fiction and MFA in Creative Nonfiction at the University of King’s College. Each June, students come to Halifax for an intensive on-campus residency focused on writing, mentorship, readings, seminars and community-building.
This page is designed to help incoming and returning MFA students plan for their stay at King’s during the June residency.
The residency begins early on June 6, so students are strongly encouraged to arrive in Halifax on the afternoon or evening of June 5. Programming wraps up in the early evening of June 14.
Students attending the June residency may choose to stay in residence at King’s through Conference Services. On-campus accommodations are a convenient option for students who want to stay close to residency programming and enjoy a simple, affordable stay in the heart of Halifax’s South End.

Students staying in residence should plan their own meals. While there is no kitchen access, students have:
There are many nearby dining options in Halifax’s South End within walking distance of campus, including cafes, restaurants and grocery stores.
Students may also choose to access dining services at Dalhousie University. Dalhousie Conference Services offers reasonably priced meal options during the summer months. Please note that these are not included in residency fees and must be arranged and paid for separately.
Students are welcome to stay off campus if they prefer. However, staying in residence at King’s offers the most affordable option and provides a unique opportunity to live and connect with your cohort in a shared, immersive academic environment.
If you have accessibility requirements for your stay on campus or for your participation in the residency, please review the university’s accessibility information and let Conference Services know about your needs as early as possible when booking your room.
Students who prefer not to stay on campus may also wish to explore accommodation options elsewhere in Halifax, including nearby Dalhousie Conference Services offerings, hotels or short-term rentals.
Students should plan to arrive in Halifax a day before their studies start. The residency begins bright and early on the start date.
