Several times each semester, President Lahey brings a King’s alum to have lunch in the lodge with current students. Together, they enjoy a delicious meal and casual conversation. This month Pres. Lahey has invited Karen Gatien, BA’89, to join the gathering.
Karen Gatien has held a variety of leadership roles since joining the Government of Nova Scotia in 1988. These include positions in the fields of workforce development, public school and early childhood education, adult education, policy and planning, and natural resources and energy.
In July 2015, Karen was appointed Associate Deputy Minister, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Since September 2021, Karen has been the Deputy Minister of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables with responsibility for oversight of the development, management, conservation and protection of the province’s forest, wildlife, mineral and energy resources.
In addition to this role, Karen was appointed an Executive Deputy Minister in June 2024.
Karen holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of King’s College and a Master of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University.
Karen and her husband reside in Dartmouth and have two adult children.
To reserve your spot at the table with Karen on Friday, November 22, please email Interim Alumni Relations Manager Candice MacDonald at candice.macdonald@ukings.ca. Please also indicate if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies in your email. The first ten students to RSVP will be able to join Karen and President Lahey for this special lunch.
