UKC’s women’s soccer came away from last week’s action with one win and one loss. On Wednesday, the Blue Devils took on Halifax rivals, Mount Saint Vincent at Mainland Commons. With the Blue Devils missing several key players, particularly on their backline, they were in for an uphill battle. The Blue Devils battled hard the entire game, with highlights coming from Ainslee Nicholl-Penman who faced 12 total shots, saving 10 of them, including a highlight reel save off a powerful strike from MSVU’s Leah Mombourquette. Despite their efforts, the Blue Devils weren’t able to find the back of the net, losing the contest 2-0.
The UKC Blue Devils women’s soccer took on the Crandall Chargers in their first home game of the year on Saturday. Following the loss to the Mystics, the Blue Devils looked to bounce back in a big fashion. Veteran winner Faye Little opened up the match with two goals in the 23rd and 27th minute, and the Blue Devils never looked back. Demonstrating their impressive offensive firepower, a total of five Blue Devils managed to register a goal, with two goals coming from Tia Lovegrove (33rd, 63rd minute), and one goal for Katie Trifos (43rd minute), Callie Jurmaine (73rd minute), and Hannah MacDonald (84th minute). The Blue Devils walked away with a 7-1 win.
The Blue Devils currently sit in third place despite being only one point behind league leader MSVU.
The men’s soccer team came into the week searching for their first win, taking on MSVU on Wednesday. The game was at a deadlock until the 45th minute when veteran centre mid Jonah Cameron managed to put the ball past MSVU’s Tristan Brocklehurst. The Blue Devils would hold on to this lead for much of the second half until the 81st minute when MSVU’s Andrew Omojuwa scored an unassisted goal. The game would end in a 1-1 tie.
The UKC Blue Devils took on the Crandall Chargers in their first home game of the season. The Chargers came out with a full head of steam scoring an early goal in the 6th minute courtesy of Wyatt Ross. The Blue Devils wouldn’t be held scoreless for long however, with Luke Kotaska scoring a goal amidst chaos in front of the Chargers net in the 32nd minute. The game would go back and forth with the Blue Devils registering 11 shots compared to the Charger’s 8. Despite good chances with some late corner kicks, the game ended in a 1-1 draw, the Blue Devils fourth draw in as many games.
Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams will take on Holland College and Dal AC at Wickwire field on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Participating in the inaugural Rugby 7s tournament, the UKC women’s rugby team came away with two wins and one loss. Facing off against Dal AC, the women showed they’re a force to be reckoned with, winning in a dominating fashion, 27-12. Taking on campus rivals, the women didn’t let off the throttle, winning 15-5. The Blue Devils only loss of the tournament came against UNBSJ who managed to come away with the win 17-5. Despite a three-way tie with six points each for Dalhousie Halifax, UNBSJ and UKC, the Blue Devils finished second in the standings after the tiebreaker.
The women’s rugby team will be back in action October 5 at Graves Oakley field when they host the second and final regular season tournament.
