Host Blue Devils Have Strong Showing at ACAA Soccer Championships

The ACAA Soccer Championships wrapped up this weekend with Holland College taking the men’s championship and Mount St. Vincent prevailing on the women’s side.

The event, hosted by King’s on Dalhousie’s Wickwire turf, saw both of our Blue Devils squads lose in close semi-final matches to each of the eventual champions.

The Women’s team played in deadlock with the Mount Mystics for 85 minutes in a frosty game characterized by staunch defense, but the Mount broke through with a goal that ultimately proved to be the difference.

In the men’s semi, Holland College took a 1-0 lead into halftime after a 24th-minute goal, and looked to bury King’s with a 78th minute marker that put them up 2-0. Undaunted the Blue Devils responded quickly with a goal in the 84th minute and pushed the play for the remainder, but were unable to overcome the Hurricanes in a 2-1 loss.

On Friday’s banquet preceding the tournament, six King’s players were named to the All-Conference teams. Angus Porter was named ACAA Rookie of the Year and James Whiteman was given the Bob Coe award for Dedication.
