Dear King’s community,
Yesterday we learned about the passing of The Most Reverend Arthur Peters, a King’s alum who served our community as Chair of the Board of Governors from 1985 to1993, and Vice-Chair from 1999 to 2000.
As former King’s President George Cooper said, “Art was a much-loved figure around the Quad and across the province.”
Arthur graduated from King’s with a Bachelor of Arts in 1960, a Bachelor of Sacred Theology in 1963 and a Bachelor of Divinity in 1973. In 1982, King’s conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Divinity in recognition of his long and distinguished career in service to his community and church.
He was elected Metropolitan (Archbishop) of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada on October 19, 1997, until his retirement on February 28, 2002. Even as Archbishop, Arthur remained on the King’s Board of Governors until 2000.
On behalf of the university, we extend our condolences to his wife Elizabeth, BA’59, BEd’60, and their three children, Charlotte BA’87, Johanna and Nicholas.
His funeral will be held at the Cathedral Church of All Saints in Halifax on Monday, November 9 at 11:00 am. You can read his full obituary here.
On Monday, flags in the Quad will fly at half-mast in honour of Rev. Peters.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tim Vine
President and Vice-Chancellor
