King’s journalism faculty and alumni carry on tradition of excellence at 2021 Atlantic Journalism Awards

Alumni, faculty and students from the School of Journalism continue to make their mark on east coast reporting and storytelling, as evidenced in this year’s Atlantic Journalism Awards (AJAs). A total of 17 medals were handed out to King’s faculty and alumni, while CBC Prince Edward Island’s Donna Allen, BJ(Hons)’85, was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Class of 2021 graduates Rose Murphy, BJ’21, and Travis Devonport, BJ(Hons)’20, MJ’21, received student awards.

With awards recognizing work across an array of platforms—newspaper, magazine, radio, TV, digital—since their inception in 1981, the AJAs have honoured journalistic excellence and achievement in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. Among the 2021 recipients, the King’s connections were everywhere, from veteran reporters who’ve worked their beats for years and decades, to current students who are already staking their claim as writers to watch.

Two faculty members from the School of Journalism, Stephen Kimber and Trina Roache, each received gold medals. Kimber received two gold for his writing in Atlantic Business Magazine, one for Best Profile Article and one for Arts & Entertainment Reporting.

Roache, BJ ’00, who was recently appointed Rogers Chair in Journalism, won gold along with APTN colleague Angel Moore, BJ’18, in the Breaking News/Spot News Television category.

Congratulations to all!
