Kim Pittaway, an accomplished publishing professional, will join the University of King’s College’s MFA in Creative Nonfiction program as Executive Director. She brings deep industry experience in writing, editing, publishing and management consulting to the graduate program in Halifax.
“We are delighted to have Kim come on board,” says Tim Currie, Director of the School of Journalism. “Attracting someone with her level of experience in the publishing industry is a further indication of the strength of this program.”
Kim has built successful communication and content strategies for clients across Canada. For almost two decades she was a consultant for Magazines Canada, where she managed publishing workshops and helped small publishers expand their social media profiles. Kim is a past president of the National Magazine Awards Foundation and a current board member of the Writers Federation of Nova Scotia.
Readers will be familiar with Kim’s journalism work as former editor-in-chief of Chatelaine and through her engaging stories in Canadian Living, Cottage Life, Reader’s Digest, The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star. She was the 2015 recipient of the National Magazine Award Foundation’s Award for Outstanding Achievement. Kim currently edits DAL Magazine for Dalhousie University’s communications and marketing department.
King’s was fortunate to have a candidate for this position who was already integrally involved with the university. Kim has been a mentor to writers in the MFA program and she has served on its national advisory board. In recent years she has also taught a magazine workshop in the university’s undergraduate journalism program. Kim has a graduate degree from Goucher College in Maryland – one of the institutions for writers who specialize in creative nonfiction.
Kim begins her position as Executive Director in May 2017. She replaces Don Sedgwick, who is retiring from the position after helping build the program’s success since its launch in 2013.
