UKC Basketball Recap November 15-21

Women’s Basketball

The women’s team found themselves on the losing side of the scoresheet in the first installment of the UKC-MSVU rivalry series, dropping an 81-66 game on Friday night. Starting the game well, the Blue Devils carried a three point lead into the second quarter and then expanded the gap to eight before entering halftime. A third quarter offensive surge allowed the home Mystics erase the deficit and take a narrow three-point lead into the final quarter. They went on to outscore the Blue Devils 24-12, walking away with the win. Jenna Bain led the King’s side with 16 points, while Kaleigh Coco-Edman and Emma Garagan also reached double figures, adding 16 and 11 respectively for the Blue Devils. Mystic starter Kelsey Crocker led all scorers with 21, accompanied by teammate Tahlia Jones with 18.

The Blue Devils have now lost three of their last four games, with King’s relinquishing a second half lead in each loss. Only five games deep into the season, there is plenty of time for the 5th place UKC Women to adjust. While  sitting on a record of 2-3, King’s has had two losses by single digits, including a 1-point-loss on the road at Mount Allison last week. The Blue Devils have a immense opportunity in the upcoming week with visits coming from Crandall University and Holland College in the last games of the Fall semester. King’s notched a narrow win over the Crandall Chargers in the opening week of competition, while Sunday’s home game will be the first meeting between the Blue Devils and second-ranked Hurricanes this season. Those games are set for Saturday, November 27 at 1 p.m. and November 28 at 2 p.m.. Both games will be streamed on ACAA.tv.

@MSVU: 66-81 Loss

Men’s Basketball

A marquee win for the UKC Men, who snapped a 10-year losing streak at the Mount with a 89-79 over the Mystics. The heated rivalry proved to be well worth the price of admission, with the Halifax teams going toe-to-toe through the first half, entering the break tied at 44. An offensive acceleration by the Blue Devils in the second half proved to be the decisive factor, with the King’s side propelling themselves to a 10-point win. Senior guard Jayden Nordin maintained his strong start to the season, posting a game-high 34 points, with fellow starters Geevon Janday and Josh Crocker both hitting double figures with 13 and 18 points each. For the Mystics, guard Jaxon Smith, and forwards Dawson Berze-Butts and Joel McCrossin all reached double figures and substitute Ty Murnaghan lead the home side in scoring with 19.

Shifting into 4th place in the ACAA, the UKC Men are 4 points off the league leaders Holland College and 2 points off 2nd place Crandall University, both of whom will visit King’s on the coming weekend. Still undefeated at home, the Blue Devils will be keen to peg back the Chargers of Crandall and avenge their season-opening loss in Moncton. At 5-0, the Hurricanes of Holland College presently boast the only undefeated record in the league, and will undoubtedly draw a sell-out when they travel to Halifax. The Blue Devils will first host Crandall on Saturday, November 27 at 3 p.m. and Holland on Sunday, November 28 at 4 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ACAA.tv.
