UKC Basketball Recap, October 24-30

Women’s Basketball

A solid start for life in the ACAA for Head Coach, Marika Williams, who, despite the loss, played Holland College to a close game for three of four quarters in their home opener. The Blue Devils started very well, taking a five-point lead after the first quarter, and trailing by two at halftime. The Hurricanes hit their stride during a difficult third quarter, outscoring their hosts 27-13, a deficit the UKC women were incapable of erasing before the whistle, with the final score ending 61-76. Junior shooting guard, Norah Quinlan led the scoring for the Blue Devils, dropping a career high 21 points, while Lisa Bolander led the visiting Hurricanes with 17.

The box score reads quite nicely for the King’s women, who, beyond the third quarter, kept the game very close. Senior guard, Jenna Bain was uncharacteristically quiet by her standards, only tallying 10 points from the field. With Bain and the rest of the King’s senior staff shaking off the rust, the UKC coaching staff have plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks. However, there will be little time to reflect and problem solve before they travel to Mount Saint Vincent University on the weekend for their first cross-town showdown with MSVU; the reigning ACAA Champions.

Men’s Basketball

A home opener to forget for the UKC men, who found themselves on the short end of a 73-120 score. A strong first quarter represented the lone high point for the Kingsmen, who trailed by only five points after the first 10 minutes before being outscored by 33 at halftime. Rookie Brendan Morris led the King’s scoresheet with 13 points, while Holland College substitute, Kyree Thompson led all scorers with a 24-point performance.

A short memory will be the priority for UKC, who have only a week before squaring off against the MSVU Mystics in Halifax on November 5th. Despite being the reigning ACAA Champions, the Mystics lost twice to King’s last season, with UKC head coach, Luc Stevenson, posting a perfect record over the crosstown rivals in the ACAA regular season.
