UKC Rugby Recap, October 17-23

Women’s Rugby

It was a maiden trip to Prince Edward Island for the UKC Women, who visited the Holland College Hurricanes for the first time every after the Island side joined the ACAA this season. The trip across the bridge proved to be a fruitless visit for the Blue Devils, who found themselves on the short side of a 21-39 loss after 80 minutes. Amelia Jardine led the King’s offence with two tries, with Amy Randell adding a third, and fullback, Emily White knocking in three conversions. Holland’s Tori Hogan proved to be the matches top scorer, amassing 29 points from four tries, three conversions, and a penalty, with teammate Avery Bradley contributing an additional two tries. With the win, the Hurricanes lock the third seed ahead of playoffs, with King’s destined to square off against UNB in the 1-v-4 semi-final matchup.

The Blue Devils will have one more match to get in tune before their date with UNB in Fredericton. A midweek trip to Sackville for a storm replay will represent the last league match before playoffs for both King’s and Mount Allison. The UKC Women will have a number of players returning from injury ahead of their final two matches. Depth will be a key factor for the Blue Devils down the stretch, but the reinforcements are arriving just in time for the playoff push.

Men’s Rugby

The party continues for Geno Carew and King’s Men’s Rugby, who have completed the season undefeated, coming from behind to tame the Dal Tigers 40-10 in their final match of the regular season. Playing with only 16, with several key players missing through injury, the rowdy Blue Devils rallied throughout the second half, scoring 33 points unanswered to maintain their perfect streak and finish top of the table for the first time in nearly a decade.

Charlie Harris led the way for the Blue Devils, recording two tries and four conversions. Elsewhere scrum-half, Dylan Aleck, recorded a pair of tries with Ethan McCarthy and Nick Ferguson also reaching the zone, and Ferguson adding a conversion to round out the scoring.

With a veteran roster and solid team chemistry, the UKC Men are in the driver seat for the playoffs. With the number one seed comes the luxury of hosting the semi-finals, so the Kingsmen will benefit from home field advantage when why play host to St. Francis Xavier. The Blue Devils bested the X-Men on both of their regular season meetings, by a combined score of 61-26. That match is slated for Saturday, October 29th and will be played in Halifax, with the time and field location forthcoming.
