UKC Rugby Recap, October 31-November 6

One down and one to go for the UKC men who ended their season as champions of Nova Scotia with an undefeated 8-0 record. The Blue Devils met Cape Breton University in the final enduring a war of attrition on the forward lines, often bringing two or three men to complete tackles. In the open field though, the Kingsmen were lethal. Extended runs from the backline players dissected the Cape Breton defence, with scrum-half, Dylan Aleck and fly-half, Charlie Harris directing the assaults. Five Blue Devils found the try zone with Nate Cameron, Ryoma Mibuchi, Luke Dyment, Duncan Smith (2), and the aforementioned Harris all penning their names to the scoresheet. Harris also completed 3 conversions. Amongst the scores the most notable was that of hooker, Ethan McCarthy, who kicked a grubber ball through the Caper defence and into the run of Ryoma Mibuchi, who touched the ball down in the try zone for 5 points.

In the post game the Blue Devils were awarded the Wood Cup, and recognized as league champions; the first title for King’s since the 2012-13 season. With the Nova Scotia title secured, the Kingsmen are just one match away from perfection. The Maritime Rugby Final is set to be hosted by the University of New Brunswick in a week’s time in Fredericton. In the meantime, the Blue Devils will take the week to nurse the injuries and finalize their battle plan ahead of their date with UNB on the weekend.
