UKC Rugby Recap, Sept. 4-10

Women’s Rugby

The UKC Women cruised to a comfortable win in their season opener at home against the visiting Rams of Dal AC. Led by rookie Kali Jones with 5 tries for 25 points, a total of six Blue Devils found their way onto the scoresheet with tries coming from Paige Minty, Clara Schumph (2), Chloe Beamish (2), Mali Triger (4), and Amy Randall. Triger and Randall also combined for 7 conversions to top up a total score of 84 points. The visiting Rams posted a pair of tries and conversions, both through the efforts of Ella Bryson, to tally 14 points on the day, leading the AC’s scoresheet.

After gameweek 1, Blue Devils sit joint-top in the league standings, joining Holland College and Mount Allison, who both enjoyed season opening wins on the weekend. The UKC Women will have a weeks rest before they travel to Fredricton and face the Mount Allison Mounties in their first road test of the ACAA campaign.

Men’s Rugby

The Kingsmen picked up where they left off in 2022, recording their 11th consecutive league victory as they bested the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in Halifax by a score of 40-19. Three of Geno Carew’s men found the try zone, with Garrett Horne, Bradley Jardine, and Eathan Salsman (2) all recording scores. Returning fly-half and 2022-23 league all-star, Charlie Harris added a pair of conversions and penalties, helping the UKC Men to amass a total of 40 points. A trio of X-Men recorded tries (Beaton, O’Callaghan, and Waller) with O’Callaghan and Reidell also contributing a pair of conversions for 19 points total.

The UKC Men will next travel to Wolfville for their first match against the Acadia Axemen and their first away match of the season. That game is scheduled for Saturday, September 16th, at 12 p.m.
