UKC Volleyball Recap, January 16-22

Women’s Volleyball

A difficult visit from St. Thomas on the weekend resulted in the UKC women enduring their first home loss of the season. The Blue Devils started strong and struck early, putting away the first set comfortably by a score of 25-20. Quick adjustments by the Tommies reversed the score in the second set bringing the match to 1-1. The Blue Devils drifter further off pace in a trying third set, shipping nine points to the Tommies and dropping behind two sets to one. Beate Shannon’s squad took an early lead in the fourth set, in hopes of extending the match. But again, the St. Thomas staff identified and adjusted accordingly, pegging back the Blue Devils and sealing the set and match 25-21.

Though it may be painful to see the home winning streak end, the UKC women are still very much in the hunt for the number one overall seed in the ACAA postseason. A helpful win from St. Thomas over local rivals MSVU on the weekend puts the Blue Devils one game off first, with the league-leading Tommies having played one extra match. That being said, the top portion of the league is particularly congested with all top four teams jockeying for position. A crucial pair of matches in the coming game week will have massive ramifications in the league standings. King’s travels first to Mount Allison before returning to Halifax to face MSVU away from home. The Mystics, who bested the Blue Devils in their first meeting, are tied for second with King’s in the league standings. Both those matches will be streamed on ACAA.TV.
