Peer Academic Advisor

Virginia Hector Virginia Hector

I am a third-year student currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with a Combined Honours in Contemporary Studies and Classics and a Minor in Gender and Women’s Studies. I am from Regina, Saskatchewan, but ever since moving to Halifax for my degree, I’ve fallen in love with the East Coast!

This is my first year working as a Peer Academic Advisor, and I am so excited to be part of the Academic Advising Team! As someone who has benefitted from academic advising myself, I understand what it’s like to be on the other side of the advising desk. I want to support students and help them feel confident as they navigate degree pathways and academic processes.

In my spare time, I like to read, bake, and go on walks while listening to Hozier. You can usually find me on the fifth floor of the Halifax Central Library, drinking coffee and working on an essay!

Tip for Success: Ask lots of questions! This applies to all aspects of university life. Don’t be afraid to go to your professors’ office hours, book an appointment with an academic advisor, or reach out to King’s student support and/or residence staff. And remember: you don’t have to have everything figured out right now, so stay open to new experiences and possibilities!

As a Peer Academic Advisor, I can help with:

  • first- and second-year undergraduate academic advising appointments
  • course selection, scheduling and registration
  • navigating degree options and pathways
  • guidance and support with academic processes like grading policies, academic dates, withdrawals and confirmation letters
  • understanding degree requirements and where to go for departmental advising
  • information on, and direction or referral to, other student life and health/wellness supports and services
