In addition to loving words and books here at King’s we also love to perform. King’s students have many opportunities to explore their artistic interests through our active theatre, choral and dance groups.
The King’s Theatrical Society (KTS), entirely run by students, organizes an ambitious production season of extraordinary high-quality performances.
It’s one of the oldest theatrical societies in North America and is also the largest per capita campus society of its kind on the continent.
Each year, based on what’s pitched by local and student artists, the KTS puts up commercial plays, musicals, original student-written works and experimental pieces.
The King’s Chorus is a choral society open to anyone in the broader King’s community that performs one concert each academic term. It comprises approximately 60 members each year including students, faculty, staff and members of the local community. The Chorus offers high-level choral training and performance experience for singers of all abilities, from the beginner to the professional. Informal auditions are held at the beginning of term.
The King’s College Chapel Choir is celebrated throughout the Maritimes and is known across Canada for its professional-level choral singing in services and concerts. The Chapel Choir comprises 24 choristers who study at King’s College and Dalhousie University, and four section leads who serve as mentors for the student choristers. The choir’s primary function is to sing at weekly Evensong and Eucharist services in the King’s College Chapel, as well as other major services throughout the academic year. In addition to services in the Chapel, the Chapel Choir performs large-scale choral masterworks in concert at least one per academic term.
The King’s Dance Collective (KDC) aims to provide a non-competitive outlet for students interested in all aspects of dance and choreography.
Professional and student-run workshops are held periodically, introducing students to various styles of dance. Additionally, the KDC simply gives students a space to dance and practice by providing open studio times.
The above are but four of our largest artistic groups. You can find a full list of student societies that are brimming with award-winning creative outlets for you at King’s. Bring it with you when come to King’s! In addition to its regular parade of guest musicians, the HMCS King’s Wardroom and chapel have open mic nights, poetry readings and other performances. There’s also a piano in the Wardroom that anyone is free to play. Within reason and reasonable hours, residence life welcomes live music, too.
