Scholarship and Award FAQs and Policies

The following points outline general policies that apply to the administration of entrance and in-course scholarships awarded by the University of King’s College. For information about bursaries offered, please visit this page.

Apply for undergraduate scholarships and awards

What types of entrance awards are available?

King’s offers General Entrance Scholarships and Major Entrance Scholarships. Visit here for more information on the application process and the value of awards available.

Who is eligible to apply for undergraduate entrance scholarships and awards?

  • Students applying to King’s directly from high school
  • CEGEP students who have completed Secondary V (DES)
  • Mature students who have not completed any transferrable post-secondary study

Are transfer students eligible for entrance scholarships?

Transfer students (including those transferring from Dalhousie) are not eligible for King’s scholarships in the year of transfer. After one year, these students are considered on the same basis as other students.

Where do I send my supporting documents and major awards application?

Official transcripts must be sent to the King’s Registrar’s Office directly by the issuing institution or school. More information on submitting transcripts and supporting documents can be found here.

Visit our Major Scholarships page for specific instructions on how to submit your major award application and supporting documentation.

What grades do I submit?

Entrance award consideration is typically assessed after first semester grades become available.  For those whose school is not semestered, your school can provide mid-term grades.

Ontario students: if you added your OUAC number on your application we will receive grades electronically.

Nova Scotia students: if you added your NS ID number on your application we will receive grades electronically.

If you were admitted based on self-reported grades, we will also require an official copy of your first semester grades or your OUAC/NS ID number.

Does King’s offer entrance awards for students starting in January?

Our entrance award program is open to applicants starting in September only.

Can I be re-evaluated for a general entrance award based on my final marks?

Grades may fluctuate after first semester, but your final award decision is based on first semester finals.

Applying for advanced/graduate scholarships and awards

What types of advanced/graduate awards are available?

King’s offers advanced and graduate major awards. Visit here for more information on the application process and the value of awards available.

Where do I send my supporting documents and major awards application?

Official transcripts must be sent to the King’s Registrar’s Office directly by the issuing institution or school. More information on submitting transcripts and supporting documents can be found here.

Your major award application will be submitted as part of your admission application. Selecting the awards you want to be considered for, and any supporting documents can be uploaded to your admission application.

Entrance scholarships and awards administration

When will I know if I have received an entrance scholarship?

General entrance award decisions are made on a rolling basis.

Short-listed candidates for undergraduate major awards will be notified as soon as the Scholarship Committee has made its decision after the March 1 scholarship application deadline.

Advanced and graduate major award decisions are made on a rolling basis.

Can scholarships be deferred?

General entrance scholarships/awards can be deferred.

Undergraduate, advanced and graduate major scholarships/awards cannot be deferred.

Are scholarships renewable?

All undergraduate general entrance scholarships are renewable: $2,250 in years two, three and four if you remain in scholarship standing (minimum 3.7 GPA)

Many undergraduate major scholarships are renewable but have different criteria for renewing. Some major scholarships require good academic standing (minimum GPA of 2.0) and others require scholarship standing (minimum GPA of 3.7). Please see Major Scholarships page for details of each award.

Advanced and graduate awards are not renewable, with the exception of the MFA scholarships.

Can I combine a major scholarship with other scholarships at King’s?

Undergraduate major scholarships are offered in lieu of general entrance scholarships; students may accept a major scholarship or an entrance scholarship, but not both.

All scholarship recipients may still apply for financial-need-based awards.

What are the registration criteria for scholarships?

In all cases, students holding scholarships must be registered as King’s students in at least nine credit hours or the equivalent in each of the Fall and Winter terms. Should their registration fall below nine credit hours at any point in the year, the award will be prorated based on the number of months during which the student was in full-time attendance.

In-course scholarships/awards

Returning students will be considered for scholarships automatically at the end of each academic year; no special applications are necessary. King’s in-course scholarships are provided through various gifts, bequests and endowments, as well as from University funds.

Is there a minimum GPA for in-course scholarships?

Yes. In-course scholarships require a minimum 3.7 GPA, which is calculated using grades achieved in the Fall and Winter terms. For students who believe they have been unjustly denied a scholarship due to an error in process, please complete and submit this form to appeal the decision.

What are the registration requirements for in-course scholarships?

Students who, in an Academic Year (September-May), have completed a full course load (i.e. 30 credit hours) and qualify for an in-course scholarship based on their academic record, will be eligible for 100% of their scholarship award.

What if I complete fewer than 30 credit hours in a year, will I qualify for an in-course scholarship?

Students who, in an Academic Year (September-May), complete eighteen, twenty-one, twenty-four or twenty-seven credit hours or the equivalent and qualify for an in-course scholarship based on their academic record, will have their scholarship amount prorated according to the number of credits they completed in that Academic Year.

Am I able to get the full in-course scholarship by completing summer courses?

Qualified students who have had their scholarships prorated will be eligible to increase their scholarship award (to a maximum of 100%) if they complete further credit hours in a summer session with a minimum GPA of 3.7, increasing the total number of credits completed within a calendar year (September 1-August 31). Reassessment will consider all courses taken within the September to August period. The deadline for reassessing prorated scholarships is the last day to add courses in September.

Can I study abroad or take a leave of absence while receiving an in-course scholarship?

Scholarship holders who plan to participate in study abroad programs or who wish to take a leave of absence from the University should consult the Academic Calendar for specific regulations or contact awards@ukings.ca.

General scholarship and award policies

How will I receive my scholarship funds?

All scholarships, prizes and bursaries will first be credited to the student’s account for payment of fees owed to the University (tuition, residence and other required fees). Any portion in excess of the aforementioned charges will be refunded to the student, normally after the final date for payment of tuition and fees each term.

Scholarships are tenable in the academic year immediately following their award unless arrangements are made to defer the scholarship to a subsequent academic year.

Is my King’s award recorded on my transcript?

All awards (excluding bursaries) are listed on your transcript.  The name of your award may change to reflect the name of a donor. In this case, you will be notified by awards@ukings.ca.

How will my information be used?

The names, hometown and programs of study of students who have received scholarships will be released to the donors of those awards.
