Volunteer Opportunities: The University of King’s College invites Applications to Join the Board of Governors

Established in 1789, the University of King’s College is Canada’s oldest chartered university and is associated with Dalhousie University. A small and extraordinarily lively academic community located in Halifax (Kjipuktuk), Nova Scotia, King’s is known nationally and internationally for its highly acclaimed interdisciplinary programs in the humanities, including its renowned Foundation Year Program, its professional programs in journalism and its fine arts programs in creative writing. King’s is a community where students, faculty, alumni, and staff work to bring greater understanding, creativity, and compassion to the world.

King’s is experiencing its renaissance, and we are looking for dynamic and skilled community members to assist us in that process. The Board of Governors at King’s is responsible for providing strategic leadership, effective stewardship and advancing the best interests of the University as a whole. Board members represent the interests of all constituencies that are vital to the mission of King’s.

King’s is looking for volunteers from the community to join King’s as Board members. We are seeking dynamic and thoughtful individuals within the following areas of expertise:

  • Fundraising
  • Marketing and Communications
  • Finance and Accounting
  • Facility Management and Planning
  • Project Management
  • Governance
  • Human Resources
  • Law
  • Investment Planning
  • Post-secondary Education
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing

Participation on the Board at King’s requires a minimum commitment of participation and attendance at quarterly Board meetings (four times per year for an average total commitment of 32 to 35 hours). Board members will also be required to participate as Board representatives on various Committees of the Board (approximately 12 to 35 hours per year, depending on the Committee). Attendance at Board orientation is required in the first year of participation at the Board, and ongoing Board education will be provided. All meetings take place in Halifax but are conducted as hybrid meetings with online attendance possible.

In addition to the above, Board members are welcome and encouraged to attend campus events, including lectures and formal dinners, and to participate generally in raising the profile of King’s in the wider community.

Closing Date: Ongoing need

Start Date: To be determined

The University of King’s College is committed to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.  We believe this to be central to the identity of the University and should be reflected in the governance structure of King’s, including in our Board.  We encourage and welcome applications from Indigenous persons (especially Mi’kmaq), persons with a disability, racialized persons, including persons of Black/African descent (especially African Nova Scotians), women, persons of a minority sexual orientation and/or gender identity, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversification of our community.

Candidates who have experience in the areas of expertise listed above, and individuals who have a current appreciation for the University or who are otherwise keen to learn about King’s, are both encouraged to apply.  Please forward resume and brief cover letter to:
