Academic Position Contemporary Studies Program (Part-time)

Established in 1789, King’s College is Canada’s oldest chartered university and is associated with Dalhousie University. A small and extraordinarily lively academic community located in Halifax (Kjipuktuk), Nova Scotia, King’s is known nationally and internationally for its highly acclaimed interdisciplinary programs in the humanities, including its renowned Foundation Year Program, its professional programs in journalism and its fine arts program in creative writing. King’s is a community where students, faculty, alumni, and staff work to bring greater understanding, creativity, and compassion to the world.

The University of King’s College’s Contemporary Studies Program invites applications for a part-time instructor who would be responsible for teaching the following course in the Fall term (Sept.–Dec. 2025): CTMP 3322.03/GERM 3322 Representations of the Holocaust: Remembrance

Calendar description

This course focuses on memoirs and literary accounts of the Holocaust written several decades after the war, as well as on contemporary debates about the nature of Holocaust memory and commemoration. Of special interest is the struggle of both children and grandchildren of survivors and children and grandchildren of perpetrators to reckon with their parents’ and grandparents’ past. We will evaluate the burden of responsibility for the past postulated by these texts and consider how the Holocaust has been represented in literature, film, photography, and museum exhibits. We will look at Holocaust denial, with emphasis on anti-Semitism and white supremacy movements in Canada. Finally, we will consider the politics of Holocaust memory in comparative perspectives. This course includes excerpts from films, documentaries and other videotaped material, and illustrated lectures on Holocaust art.

For 2025-26, the class is scheduled in the Fall term on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:05–5:25 p.m.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching 3 hours of classes per week, evaluating assignments, attending staff meetings and holding office hours. If eligible, the candidate may be required to supervise a teaching assistant(s). This position reports to the director of the program.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should possess, as a minimum requirement, a Master’s degree in interdisciplinary humanities or a relevant discipline or field of research, although a Ph.D. is preferred. Expertise in Holocaust studies will be an asset. Prior experience teaching at the university level is required.

Pay Rate: Remuneration is based upon qualifications and experience.

To apply: Applicants must submit a cover letter stating their qualifications for, and interest in, teaching the class and a curriculum vitae by noon on Friday, June 13, 2025 to:

Sharon Brown

Email: sharon.brown@ukings.ca  (cc Dr. Stephen Boos, at stephen.boos@ukings.ca)
