Photojournalism Instructor

The University of King’s College is seeking an instructor to teach two sections of JOUR 3660.03 Photojournalism, one in each of the Fall and Winter terms of the 2024-25 academic year.

This course is an elective offering for King’s and Dalhousie undergraduate students. It provides instruction in still photography to tell visual stories using a journalistic mindset. (See Student Learning Objectives below.)

The two sections of this course will be delivered online in an asynchronous format from September 3 to December 3, 2024 (Fall) and from January 6 to April 7, 2025 (Winter).

The instructor does not need to reside in Nova Scotia. Applicants must have the legal right to work in Canada.

Teaching Duties:

  • Develop a course syllabus that will take students through clearly defined learning objectives and assess their progress rigorously
  • Prepare engaging learning modules, exercises and assignments based on those objectives
  • Grade assignments promptly
  • Respond to student communications quickly
  • Be available to students for consultation on course work, outcomes and expectations
  • Deliver instruction in accordance with policies of the University of King’s College and the School of Journalism, Writing and Publishing — including the School’s Handbook of Professional Practice
  • Establish and maintain course materials in the learning management system, Brightspace

Qualifications for this Position:

  • An undergraduate degree in any field
  • Three years recent experience working as a photojournalist
  • Advanced photojournalism skills
  • Experience shooting and publishing photo stories
  • Familiarity with professional photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop

Preferred:

  • Candidates with a track record of successful teaching
  • Canadian citizens and permanent residents

Student Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate effective storytelling through photography
  • Demonstrate core composition techniques in shooting and editing
  • Demonstrate effective use of lighting — technically and artistically
  • Understand legal requirements and protocols when working as a photojournalist
  • Understand the ethical standards for a working photojournalist
  • Understand the role of a photojournalist in the workplace and in society
  • Demonstrate an ability to produce standard types of photography, including news, features and sports
  • Apply fundamental artistic principles of photography
  • Edit a photograph appropriately for publication
  • Caption a photograph for publication

Compensation:

The successful candidate will receive $6,478 per course, the university’s standard amount for a half-credit course. This position does not include benefits.
