Learning the foundations of the business of podcasting in Canada is the best way to increase your odds of building a winning strategy. This two-hour online workshop is designed to help podcasters in Canada understand more about the different ways podcasts can generate revenue.

Material covered includes a profile of the Canadian podcast consumer; technical overview of how podcasts and ads are delivered and measured on major platforms, potential sources of funding and benchmarks for profitability, and Canada vs international sales.

Outline

Hour 1 – The Podcasting Landscape (Jeff Ulster) – A welcome, and an introduction to the business of podcasting in Canada. We’ll talk about who’s consuming podcasts in Canada and their content choices, along with a technical overview of how podcasts and ads are delivered and measured on major platforms.

Hour 2 – We’ll focus on potential sources of funding and benchmarks for profitability, along with learning more about the opportunities for revenue outside Canada.

 


Faculty

Jeff wears a grey suit jacket with open necked white dress shirt. Jeff Ulster is co-publisher of The Canadian Podcast Listener: A Landscape Study, along with research company Signal Hill Insights. Launched in 2017, it’s the most comprehensive survey on podcast consumption in Canada. Jeff was one of the two co-founders of The Podcast Exchange (TPX), the first podcast advertising sales company in Canada. He’s also the owner of Ulster Media, an independent podcast consulting and production company. From 2011–2017, Jeff was the Director of Digital Talk Content for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

Pauline Dakin is an award-winning podcaster and journalist who teaches all things audio at the University of King’s College School of Journalism, Writing & Publishing in Halifax. Her CBC podcast Run, Hide, Repeat was the number one podcast in Canada in late 2022, was downloaded more than a million times and was named one of the top podcasts of 2022 by Amazon Podcasts. It also won a prestigious New York Festivals award.
