UKC Volleyball Recap November 8-14

Women’s Volleyball

A weekend to forget for the UKC Women’s team, who dropped both games on the road in New Brunswick to St. Thomas University and the University of New Brunswick at Saint John. Beginning in Fredericton, the visiting Blue Devils struggled to find their groove early, losing the first set 9-25. A marked improvement in the second set would see the King’s side come within three points of the Tommies, losing 22-25, before a decline in the third and final set ending 10-25. A quick turnaround put the Blue Devils back on the road to Saint John for their match against the Seawolves. Similar to the previous match, the UKC Women struggled early on, dropping the first and second sets 12-25 and 17-25 respectively, before a closer loss in the third set 22-25.

With barely a third of the season played, there’s plenty of time for the young Blue Devils to rebound prior to the ACAA Playoffs in late February. The Blue Devils have demonstrated their potency on offense, claiming sets off top sides Holland College, MSVU, and MTA in their early games. The rookie-laden squad has endured a number of adjustments in the season’s opening weeks as players find their legs within the team and the roster. Head Coach Beate Shannon has explored many different starting rosters in her first ACAA campaign. The transition of Emma Wilson from Middle to Outside Hitter has been formalized with positive stats so far, while the rookies will continue to gain comfort in and around the league as the season continues. If the Blue Devils can reel in their errors (46 in the two matches over the weekend) they’ll have plenty of time to make moves in the league standings before the mid-season break. King’s will next meet the Tommies of STU in a replay of this past weekend’s matchup. This time they’ll be at home, on Sunday, November 21 with tip set for 4 p.m. This match, and all other matches, will be streamed on ACAA.tv.
