Interested in journalism, video and audio production or photography? Then Journalism Day is for you!
On Friday, December 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. AST, high school students are invited to the King’s campus for an exciting and educational visit. Choose two hands-on workshops run by faculty to participate in, where you can learn more about:
- podcasting
- debunking fake news
- photojournalism
- video
This is an excellent curriculum-enhancing opportunity for students in Communications Technology 11/12, Film & Video Production 12, Audio Recording and Production 12, Multimedia 12 and English, or those in media-related extracurriculars like the school newspaper, yearbook or announcements team.
If you have any questions about the event, please email joshua.young@ukings.ca.
Session options:
Photojournalism with Jeff Harper
Students will learn about the power of photojournalism and explore taking photographs on their smartphone using composition and framing techniques. Jeff has been a photojournalist for the Halifax Daily News, the Chronicle Herald and the Metro Halifax and freelanced for The Globe and Mail, the Canadian Press, The National Post and Reuters. We have smartphones available for students to use if they don’t have one.
Video with Brian Daly
In this hands-on workshop, students will learn how to turn their phone into a powerful journalism tool. Brian is a producer and video journalist who has worked with CBC, CTV and Global News and is happy to answer any questions about his career. Students will have to download the free Adobe Premier Rush app for this workshop to play with some special effects.
Debunking fake news with Lisa Taylor
This is a media literacy workshop where students will tackle some big and important questions: What is disinformation? Why do people deliberately share falsehoods? How can we be better consumers of online information? Great for all students! Lisa is both an accomplished journalist and lawyer.
Podcasting with Mark Pineo
Students will learn how to use audio and sound to tell compelling stories. Students will gain insight on the lifecycle of a podcast and how their favourite podcasters create, edit and produce their content. Mark is an audio engineer and is happy to share more about his career.
