How to activate your accounts

Email set-up

Before you can register you need to activate your university email account. This account is on the Dalhousie server and carries the dal.ca domain name. You are responsible for activating it and checking it regularly, as it is our main form of official university communication.

Note: If you have applied to residence at King’s, you may have already set up your email account.

  1. Go to my.dal.ca.
  2. Click on New Users.
  3. Click on the first option: Activate or look up my NetID
  4. Select the second button: No I do not know my NetID
  5. Type in your Student ID (B0#######)
  6. Enter your birthdate in the specified format, then click on Look up NetID.
  7. You will be prompted to set an initial password.
  8. Make a note of your NetID, your email address and your password.
  9. Click on Main. Type your NetID in Username. Enter your new password.

Congratulations! You have activated your email account.

If you want your email forwarded to another account, go to Mail Management after logging into your email account. Under Email select Email Forwarding. Type in your username and password, then select Mail Forwarding. Enter the email address to which you want the mail forwarded. Click Set Forwarding.

Note: In order to register, you will need an active university email account with your NetID and password as the Dal Online system used to register uses the same login credentials.

Course Registration

When you log on to register for your classes, update your personal information or view your account, the site will be identified as Dalhousie—but you’re in the right place.

FYP, BJH and BJ students please note: although a space in your program is reserved for you, you still have to register for your classes.

To register

  1. Pay your $200 admission deposit.
  2. If you have not already set-up your email, go to myDal and follow the steps above to activate your email account
  3. Go to Dal Online, which is the system used for registration, and login with your NetID and password (the same ones used for myDal). Select Web for Students, and then select Academic Timetable to view the classes available to you. The subjects are listed in alphabetical order. Choose the appropriate subject to view classes. Ensure that you are looking at classes for the Fall/Winter 2023/2024 (or Summer 2023) year. Make a note of the Course Reference Number (CRN) for each class and tutorial you select, paying attention to which term each class is held in. You can also take down the course title and look up the CRN while on the registration page.
  4. In your DalOnline go to ‘Web for Students’ and then go to ‘Registration’. Click on ‘Prepare for Registration’. This will bring you to the main registration page. Click on ‘Prepare for Registration’ again. You will then be prompted to select your term and will then be brought to the page where you can check your Registration Status and Time Ticket.
  5. When eligible to register, you can return to the Registration page and then click on ‘Register for Classes’ where you can search for classes either by subject, course code, using keywords, or by entering your CRNs. After you have located the classes you wish to enrol in and have clicked on ‘Add to Summary’ the classes will then appear under the Summary section as “pending”. Click ‘Submit’ in the bottom right-hand corner to be fully registered.

For further guidance and detailed information, please see the Dal Online Help Centre Registration Index. See the Registration Tips videos for a visual aid.

Important things to note

  • Foundation Year Program (FYP) is listed as King’s Foundation Year Program (subject code – KING) and is a full-year multi-term course which means you must register in both the Fall & Winter parts to take the full course and receive credit.
  • Full-year (multi-term) courses will be split between two terms and will have a Part I and a Part II, which you must register for separately. For these courses you must take both parts consecutively to receive credit. Check the course description for more information.
  • Classes that are not multi-term are single term courses, lasting half of the Academic Year (i.e. occur fully in a single fall, winter or summer term).
  • If a class you want has a tutorial or lab, you must register for the lecture and tutorial/lab together or you will get an error message. Lectures are shown in beige on the timetable. Tutorials and labs are blue. If you receive a “T0 error,” you must add a tutorial. A “L0 error” means that you have to add a lecture.
  • The Dal Online system does not check for date/time scheduling conflicts. You must make sure that your classes aren’t scheduled at overlapping times, which you can check for by looking at the Class Schedule, under where you input the CRNs.
  • Do not try to register for the 2023/2024 Regular term. This term is not for undergraduate or graduate students but is specific to Medicine and Dentistry at Dalhousie.
  • If you receive an error saying ‘CRN does not exist’ you are trying to put a winter class in the fall term, or vice versa.
  • If you want to register for one of the First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs), do so at the time as you register for courses. Like courses, each FIG has a CRN. You must make sure that your FIG isn’t scheduled at an overlapping time with your classes. If you are a FYP student interested in FIGs and need support, we encourage you to contact the Academic Services Team, at registrar@ukings.ca.

To assist you with registration, we’ve decoded the Academic Timetable, explaining the various symbols, acronyms, codes and numbers that populate it.
