Master of Journalism

University of King's College

Tell a story that matters

The King’s/Dalhousie Master of Journalism program is for those who want to be leaders in their field, be that journalism or another career that demands excellent research and writing, top production skills and critical thinking.

The beating heart of the program is your professional project. You’ll work with seasoned industry pros and faculty on a major work of journalism with the goal of publishing it. Our growing roster of outside advisors will help you synthesize a large body of research into a clearly written, accessible piece of reporting of which you will be proud. (Audio or video projects may also be possible, with approval.)

The Master of Journalism takes roughly two years to complete, spanning five academic semesters. Many students begin in the fall (September) by taking introductory reporting courses alongside Bachelor of Journalism students and gaining experience as part of a working newsroom. If your undergraduate degree is in journalism or you have deep experience as a working journalist, you can join the MJ program four months later, in January.

Deeper instruction includes classes in advanced research, data journalism, visual storytelling and the fast-changing business of journalism. You can also build a program that suits your interests and professional goals, with two required electives at King’s, Dalhousie University or another institution, including our offerings such as computer programming for journalism, and podcasting.

You have the option of studying away from campus for two of the semesters—both in the summer semester between years one and two and the winter semester of year two.

Once enrolled, MJ students are eligible to apply for financial awards, including the $4,000 Peter Mansbridge Investigative Writing Award. You can also enter your work in our annual journalism awards program.

King’s MJ grads are valued for their specialized skills.

Do you want to be an industry leader? The King’s MJ will help you get there.

Year Two

Professional Project

The professional project is a substantial, in-depth piece of journalism. Normally it consists of several thousand words of text plus photos. The project will involve broad, deep research, multiple interviews, excellent photography and precise writing. It can be based on data and include online multimedia such as data visualizations, but these will not be required for all projects. The courses in the rest of the program will help you develop the skills needed to do excellent work.

The professional project is expected to be of such quality that it can be published in a major media outlet such as a national or international magazine, newspaper or online publication. It will be completed over nine months starting in the summer between the first and second academic years. Students will receive one-on-one mentoring from faculty, leading journalists and independent experts.
